This series was inspired by the author’s 2025 trip to the Feldlager event in Germany, where two 15th armies fought a three day battle around and then inside a castle. Canons were fired outside the walls, crossbow bolts cut the air, and dozens of armoured knights clashed on the surrounding hillsides. The author rode his own horse and acted as the bannerman for one side, at one time attacking a lager of three wagons, and at another charging into a wall of pikes trying to block a woodland path. The characters and events in this trilogy are inspired by that fateful weekend, and it is a tribute to all those who took part. The armour on the book covers is the author’s… with him in it.
The Rise and Fall of the Mounted Knight is a non-fiction work on the mounted knight, his horse, and his attitudes.
Designed as an all-encompassing book for someone who wants to know everything they’ll ever need to about the medieval knightly class, it blends primary sources with modern practical experience of riding and fighting in armour. The cover image is of the author, on legendary warhorse Charlie (stage name Charlemagne) of Historic Equitation. Clive has jousted for this company for many years, as well as becoming a horse-owner himself. The book looks at the emergence of the mounted knight and his fading from history, but the unique section is that on the warhorse of the knight. Here the capabilities of medieval horses is studied and explained, from how resilient they were, to how easily they will charge a block of infantry (spoiler alert, they will!).
