Wulfstan’s Conquest
Wulfstan’s world was inspired by Clive’s own experience in riding in the annual Battle of Hastings re-enactments, an event taking place every October on the actual site of the battlefield.
Seen here in 2025, and mounted on his palomino Squire, Clive has charged up the hill and attacked the Saxon shield-wall more times than he can remember. He has stood in that wall too, and faced the cavalry from Wulfstan’s perspective - feeling the earth shudder under his feet as the Norman horsemen sweep up the slope.
This brutal battle was regime ending, but more than that, it was world ending for those who stood on the losing side. History turned on the events of that one day, but that day did not burst from nowhere, and Wulfstan’s Conquest explores the seeds which flowered on a hill in a place we now call Battle.
Here is a video by Alex the History Guy on Youtube, showing the author and his yellow horse with an approximation of the arms and armour worn in the 11th century.
Wulfstan is thrust into the brutal world of Saxon warfare, and then the even more dangerous world of Saxon political intrigue. He must overcome the ferocious Welsh in their mountain strongholds, traitors more close to home, and then undertake a risky and dramatic voyage to Normandy on a diplomatic mission to Duke William. As Wulfstan finds his courage, rewards will flow from the Godwinsons, but his new proximity to power will test his wits and threaten those he holds dear.
Wulfstan will not face these challenges alone, but he will have to work hard to keep his companions alive. His brother wishes only to return to his fields, his loyal friend falls into trouble and requires his loyalty to be returned, and his horse keeps trying to get him killed.
Step into the 11th century and witness some of the most earth-shattering events to have occurred in human history, through the eyes of a man who is just trying to get out the other side alive.
Perfect for readers of Bernard Cornwell, Matthew Harffy, Griff Hosker, and Peter Gibbons, Warrior of Wessex delivers a gripping tale of loyalty, danger, and the forging of a warrior in one of history’s most turbulent eras.
